Melbourne’s cold winters make underfloor heating an increasingly popular upgrade for new builds and renovations. But not all flooring works with underfloor heating — choose the wrong combination and you could void your flooring warranty, reduce heating efficiency, or even damage your floors.

Types of Underfloor Heating
There are two main systems used in Melbourne homes:
- Hydronic (water-based): Hot water circulates through pipes embedded in or under the floor. Slower to heat but very efficient for whole-house systems. Maximum water temperature typically 50°C, with surface temperature limited to 27°C
- Electric: Heating cables or mats installed directly under the flooring. Faster response, ideal for individual rooms. Surface temperature must be limited to 27°C for most flooring types
Best Flooring for Underfloor Heating
1. Engineered Timber — The Premium Choice
Engineered timber is ideal for underfloor heating because the multiply construction resists the expansion and contraction caused by heating cycles. Products like Preference Timber are designed for this application. Choose planks no wider than 220mm and stick-down installation (not floating) for best heat transfer.

2. Hybrid Flooring — Best Waterproof Option
Hybrid flooring is compatible with both hydronic and electric underfloor heating. The SPC core handles temperature changes well, and most brands (including Preference) approve use up to 27°C surface temperature.

3. Vinyl Sheet and LVP — Commercial Favourite
Vinyl sheet and vinyl planks work well with underfloor heating when properly installed. Glue-down installation is required (not floating) to ensure direct heat contact. Polyflor and Armstrong products are approved for underfloor heating applications.
4. Laminate — Budget Compatible
Most modern laminate flooring is compatible with underfloor heating, but the floating installation creates an air gap that reduces efficiency. Use the thinnest underlay recommended by the manufacturer to minimise heat loss.
Flooring to Avoid with Underfloor Heating
- Solid timber: Too prone to warping, cracking, and gapping from repeated heating cycles
- Thick carpet with heavy underlay: Acts as insulation, blocking heat from reaching the room
- Bamboo flooring: Prone to splitting and excessive movement with temperature changes
Installation Rules for Melbourne Projects
- The heating system must be commissioned and run for at least 2 weeks before flooring installation
- Surface temperature must be reduced to 18°C for 48 hours before and after installation
- After installation, increase the temperature gradually — no more than 1°C per day
- Maximum surface temperature for all resilient flooring: 27°C
- Moisture testing of the heated screed is essential — readings must be below 75% RH
